Banana
Plug
Connector
Banana plugs are among the
most
user-friendly of the speaker wire connectors. The plug gets
its name from the shape of the metal contact surface. The
sides of the connector flare out around the middle creating a shape
that is akin to the fruit. This is the standard term used by the home
theater industry. The connecting end of the banana plug
doubles as both the contact point and the locking mechanism.
Due to this design, connections are made by simply plugging the
terminal in to the binding post. The flaring sides keep the
connector from falling out once it is plugged into a terminal.
Why Banana Plug
Connectors?
The banana plug connector is not only
easy to use, it also has one of the largest contact surfaces of the
connectors used for speaker wire. This larger contact surface
ensures that the signal will be transferred accurately between your
home theater receiver or amplifier and your speakers. For
this reason, the banana plug connector is often the most preferred by
home theater enthusiasts.
Applications of Banana
Connectors
Banana plugs are used in conjunction
with 5-way
binding posts in
their home theater applications. These are most often found
on the better home theater components on the market.
The
banana plug connector is primarily employed in connecting speakers to
home theater receivers and amplifiers. The connector also
comes in the form of the double banana plug adapter which has two of
the metal contacts attached to a single plastic unit. Outside
of home theater, the banana plug is also used in laboratory settings
when it is necessary to create connections between electrical test
equipment.
